Nolan and the cars i has

Post  nolan in blaine on February 17th 2012, 1:53 pm

1984 4 door rabbit diesel. Bought the car for $400 from a friend of mine. It was used as a mail car in Montana and had racked up roughly 700k, was on its 3rd engine, 3rd interior, and had been on its top at least twice.

some plant life...

So I bought it, brought it home, replaced the radiator, registered it, drove it.
First mod!!! Pulled bumpers.

still ugly...
fast forward a bit maybe a month or two and i finally got brave and gutted the interior.

Floors are rock solid which surprised me being a Montana car. We reused the carpet. It came pretty clean after soaking it several times with carpet cleaner and pressure washing it out. It took about an hour to get all the 26 years of sand out, but it looked like new once Jacki was done. People, if your carpet looks all worn and flat but does not have a bunch of holes in it.... pressure wash it... Looks awesome afterwards.

So after a while i had scavenged some parts here and there i had me some clean doors hood and hatch, an FF 5 speed, and thanks to Sam Poteet.... some brand new used bumpers

Next mod was cut springs... rode like ass but i though it was cool. I rocked the miss matched look for a while. I actually got the most thumbs up when it looked like this.

After a while of driving it with stock hubcaps, cut springs, and huge ugly american bumpers i came across a car that changed it all. I was a 1980 two door diesel turned GTI (what the PO said) for $200. Jacki and I towed it home with a rope. It had snowflakes, euro bumpers, perfect early westy clip, rocco wheel, Neuspeed soft sport springs, a K-bar, New front brakes, perfect tail lights a MK2 dash and CE2 harness, short throw shift linkage, and new poly bushings for the front end.... I had hit the mother load!!!

after stripping it.

And for all the haters who are mad cause a decent 2 door fell victim to my 4 door... Im really sorry. And i bet you would be really mad if you knew about the mint....MINT!!! yellow 82 two door that also got parted out and crushed for the good of my four door....Suck it.

So by this time im tearing into my first major mod on this car.... Early westy swap. My reason for this is that while the late westy looks good on the GTI, im not a fan of it on a 4 door. Makes the car look too long and narrow. I think the early westy makes it look a little wider and lower. But thats just me.

I drove it for a while. Not to long as it went from "hey that dude is fixing up a rabbit" to "ew thats gross please park somewhere else" after i did the front end swap. So i decided it was time for a bank robber paint job. Now im not gonna lie to you... I suck at body work. I dont have patience for that shit. So when you look at the pics and are thinking, damn that looks awesome.... stop it, it doesnt. Let the sanding commence.

And color. For paint i used rustolium blue and aluminum. It is almost a perfect match to the stock gay blue color. Simply mix 50/50, thin it, shoot it.

Nice write up Nolan! I knew you loved that 4dr, but I didn't know how much. We'll have to ease you into saving those gems when you find them. Or at least now we have another place to see if anyone wants them before they are forever scrapped. Anyways, thanks for the rad contribution. We'll have to go on another salvage yard run one of these days.
